Negotiation & Problem-Solving Skills For Environmental Professionals

ERM is partnering with the Hamline University Mediation Center to present a workshop on Negotiation and Problem Solving Skills for Environmental Professionals in Houston, Texas on May 11, 2016. The workshop is sponsored by the Southern Gas Association, which represents the leading trade association for the natural gas industry.

In mastering regulatory processes, environmental professionals working in the energy industry need to work cooperatively with stakeholders, engage in complex multi-party negotiations, respond to the public, manage project teams, work effectively inside their organizations, and build and repair relationships. This day and a half-day training will develop more effective strategic communication, negotiation, and critical thinking skills.

This highly interactive workshop covers critical negotiation and problem-solving skills for environmental professionals working in the energy industry. These skills will enhance your ability to work more effectively with regulatory agencies, contractors, and interdisciplinary project teams. The workshop will include case studies and skill-building exercises that will teach participants to:

  • Evaluate the risks and benefits of approaches to negotiation
  • Gain cooperation
  • Prevent conflict escalation
  • Communicate across worldviews
  • Assess factors enhancing opportunities for agreement
  • Maximize opportunities for agreement, while minimizing risk
  • Develop durable agreements

Jon Berkin, a Partner/Principal in ERM’s Minneapolis office, will be co-presenting the workshop.

Jon Berkin, Ph.D. is a Principal/Partner in the Minneapolis office of ERM. He specializes in managing the routing, siting and permitting of large scale energy infrastructure projects and the design and implementation of public outreach processes. Jon has over 20 years of environmental permitting experience in the energy industry. He has worked on energy projects throughout the lower 48 states and in Alaska. He is a frequent presenter on regulatory compliance and dispute resolution topics at energy industry conferences and workshops. Jon also holds s a Certificate in Dispute Resolution from Hamline University School of Law.
