Supporting the NRG Ivanpah Solar Facility – named Power Plant of the Year in Power magazine

05 September 2014

ERM is actively working with NRG at their Ivanpah solar power plant, which has just been voted Plant of the Year in Power Magazine.

Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System (ISEGS), located in Nipton California, about 40 miles west of Las Vegas, Nevada. It is an important development particularly as the US sees investing in clean energy as an opportunity to lead the global clean technology markets that are forming right now. To give an idea of size, the facility is comprised of three self-contained units with a total capacity of 392 MW (so approximately enough energy to power 196,000 homes in a developed economy). It uses 173,500 heliostats to concentrate sunlight on boilers on three 459-foot towers.  The project covers over 3,500 acres and is nearly 5 miles from end to end.  Commercial operations for the plant began in December 2013. Given the scale, complexity, partnership with the US government and the private sector and success of getting the facility fully operational, it was voted power plant of the year.

A key element in obtaining the permits to operate was management of the environment and in particular demonstrable care of the endangered desert tortoise which are native to the area. ERM is currently supporting NRG by managing the biology team charged with implementing the desert tortoise program. At any given time, there are dozens of trained, Agency approved (Bureau of Land Management, US Fish & Wildlife Service, California Department of Fish & Game and California Energy Commission) biologists on site to make sure that every tortoise on site is given the highest levels of care. At certain periods of construction, there have been over 150 biologists on the project.

In addition to this, ERM is also supporting NRG at Ivanpah with their national environmental audit program and OSHA Noise surveys at each of the three solar facilities.
