Case Study: Hochschild Mining PLC
Conduct Environmental, Health and Safety reviews of mining operations in Peru, Mexico and Argentina for Hochschild Mining plc to identify opportunities for improvement.
Hochschild Mining plc (Hochschild) is a leading underground precious metals producer focusing on high grade silver and gold deposits in the Americas. With operating mines in Peru, Mexico and Argentina and Canada Hochschild knows the importance of maintaining robust Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) programs across their operations.
In 2007 ERM was initially engaged by Hochschild's Board to carry out EHS reviews at the company's four active operations in Peru. Following the findings of these reviews, ERM was retained to look at two new projects in Mexico and Argentina.
ERM audit and management systems specialists from the UK were supported by local ERM staff in Ecuador, Argentina and Mexico to carry out the reviews. Focus was concentrated on assessing whether appropriate management systems were in place and, crucially, whether these were well implemented and delivering the right outcomes on the ground.
In Mexico and Argentina focus turned to how effectively EHS issues were being integrated into the project planning, design, construction and commissioning processes.
Benefits and Value
The reviews identified a number of areas of opportunity and provided a range of recommendations ranging across business systems, infrastructure and internal culture and behaviors. Hochschild was able to gain a clear picture of where the company stood in relation to its own vision and goals and in relation to its industry peers. In turn, this enabled strategies to be developed to reduce the organization’s risk exposure and enhance its EHS performance.
