During the transition period, certified organizations must transition from ISO 9001:2015 to ISO 9001:2026 to maintain certification. While formal transition rules will be issued after publication, the technical direction is now clear. Early preparation should focus on:

ISO 9001:2026: What is Changing

The 2026 revision keeps the core requirements largely intact, but it raises the bar on what credible quality leadership and culture look like in practice.

    The 2024 climate change amendment is now built into Clause 4.1, requiring organizations to determine whether climate change is a relevant issue when establishing the context of the organization. 
  • Explicit leadership accountability for quality culture and ethics 
    Top management must demonstrate clear commitment to quality culture and ethical behaviour, not just policy compliance, with this expectation embedded directly into Clause 5 leadership requirements. 
  • Sharper, separated risk and opportunity planning 
    Clause 6.1 is restructured into distinct sub-clauses, requiring organizations to address risks and pursue opportunities through clearer, more deliberate planning rather than a single combined process. 
  • Quality culture and ethics embedded in awareness and support 
    Clause 7 awareness requirements now extend to quality culture and ethical behaviour, meaning training, communication, and staff development need to go beyond procedural knowledge. 
  • New Annex A for implementation guidance 
    For the first time, ISO 9001 includes a substantial annex of supplementary guidance, clarifying structure, terminology, and clause intent to support consistent interpretation and implementation. 
  • Built-in QMS terminology 
    More quality-management-specific terms are defined directly within the standard, reducing reliance on cross-referencing ISO 9000 and making requirements easier for teams to interpret consistently. 
  • Minimal change to operational clauses 
    Clause 8 operational requirements see only minor, largely terminology-driven updates, keeping day-to-day operational impact limited.
