Value Chain

At regular intervals, ERM evaluates the key elements of our business, which include inputs to our business operations (our supply chain), the advice and services we deliver to clients and the benefits we bring to the communities where we work and operate. Taken together, these activities form our value chain.

As a business providing professional services, the main elements of our supply chain include: office space, furnishings and equipment, building maintenance and services, travel for business purposes and client work, and the engagement of contractors to support our project delivery for clients.

By understanding and addressing our supply and value chains, we can continue to track and improve our sustainability performance — and the outcomes that we deliver.

Our contributions to creating a more sustainable planet are manifested through the environmental and social impacts of the professional services we provide to our clients, moreso than through our direct operational footprint. For example, the direct greenhouse gas emissions and savings we achieve through our office operations and travel are many times smaller than the reductions in greenhouse gas emissions our clients in the oil and gas, mining and power sectors achieve as a result of our project work.

Measuring the positive impact of our work with clients is an area that our stakeholders have challenged us to improve and report on in a more comprehensive way. This year's report contains more examples of the impacts we are having through working with our clients, and the efforts we are taking to measure these more effectively.
