The Active Leadership Audit Program allows our employees to periodically and consciously stop and assess the activities that they are responsible for (or routinely observe) with respect to safety, including field work and contractor management.

The Active Leadership Audit Program (ALAP) is a collection of tools intended to drive consistency and formality around safety engagement. These tools are initially focused on Partner engagement, but they are available for all ERM employees to use in order to periodically and proactively look deeply at our projects and employee activities via Active Leadership Audits. The goal is to drive engagement with colleagues specifically around the topic of safety. While this type of engagement occurs continuously in the background, there is value to formalizing and structuring the assessment.

ERM has five types of audits that can be completed, depending on the type of activities that an employee is typically engaged in. The completion of each audit is documented using a specific, online form to ensure:

  • Audit scope and rigor is globally consistent.
  • The auditor is prompted to consider key safety topics and elements (some of which they may not have considered before).
  • Audit results are globally accessible in real-time and consolidated to identify future focus areas and trends.

Audits are a leading indicator that can be used as one measure of safety performance, and can be done by all employees. However, the completion of these audits by Partners is intended to add additional value to their projects, by:

  • Allowing them to gain insight into details of project operations;
  • Identifying areas of improvement for the audited project, as well as the Partner’s other projects; and
  • Reinforcing the safety message to the project team through action in addition to words.

To incentivize engagement, each completed audit is awarded an Engagement Score. The Engagement Score is used as a positive and sustainable approach to engage our employees in the program and a way to track that engagement over time.

We are pleased to announce the FY21 individual ALAP leaders. These Partners were able to remain highly engaged with their teams during a very difficult climate through the use of our various ALAP tools.

  • North America: James Archer with 153 engagement points and 45 distinct audits;
  • Asia Pacific: Seong Jeon with 118 engagement points and 28 distinct audits;
  • Europe, Middle East and Africa: Richard Elsmore with 76 engagement points and 26 distinct audits;
  • Global Businesses: Paul Clarke with 45 engagement points and 17 distinct audits; and
  • Latin American and the Caribbean and leading all of ERM: Paulo Santos with an outstanding 197 engagement points and 71 distinct audits.

We congratulate and thank the regional leaders for their continued emphasis on the health and safety of our staff.

The program helps us to be closer to the teams, reinforcing safety messages, identifying areas of improvement, positive aspects that worth sharing and creates a collaborative and safe environment."
