Society of Petroleum Engineers

ERM collaborates with the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) globally each year to share industry thought leadership on topics within the oil and gas industry.

SPE is a not-for-profit professional association that aims to advance the industry’s ability to meet the world’s energy demands in a safe, environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. The organization also provides a worldwide forum for exploration and production professionals to exchange technical knowledge and best practices.

In December 2019, SPE held their second Decommissioning and Abandonment (D&A) Symposium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The theme – Strategic Partnerships for a Sustainable Future – examined how Asia, still in the early stages of advancing D&A activities, can adopt and adapt previous experiences from different regional and global practices. Highlights included:

• ERM Malaysia Country Managing Partner Megan Lawson served on the program committee and chaired a panel session on Case Studies and Lessons Learned;
• Senior Consultant Kayleigh Hughes served on the program committee and presented a panel session on "Enhancing Capability and Building Strategic Partnerships to Minimize Environmental and Social Impact," a technical session for "Must Haves for a Credible Comparative Assessment," and an ePoster on "Emerging Decommissioning Trends in South East Asia."
• Paul Krause and Juliane Baquiran, ERM’s leading marine experts, presented a technical session on "Determining Environmentally Superior Decommissioning Options for Hard and Flexible Pipelines."
• ERM Partner Sabrina Genter gave a presentation of her ePoster "Stakeholder Engagement in the Decommissioning Process."

This was ERM’s second consecutive contribution to the SPE D&A Symposium.
