Our Approach and Sustainability Program

Our Sustainability Policy and Sustainability Approach articulate our commitments to sustainability at ERM. Our Vision, Values and Principles express our corporate philosophy of who we are and how we conduct business, while our Code of Business Conduct and Ethics provides the basis for professional, respectful and fair dealings in our daily operations.

These documents can be accessed by visiting our pages on Sustainability at ERM and About Us.

Our Sustainability Program is an overarching framework that supports our long-term business strategy and drives continual improvement across seven key performance areas: Our People, Health and Safety, Business Conduct and Ethics, Environment, Community, Thought Leadership and Our Clients. We have organized this report around these key areas.

Governance and Operational Structure

The Board of Directors and Executive Committee are ERM's highest governing bodies. They are responsible for the strategic direction of the organization and the effective monitoring of performance. The Executive Committee meets at least six times per year to discuss performance and future plans.

Our Sustainability Advisory Committee (SAC) brings together expertise from across the organization to provide strategic guidance and technical recommendations to the Executive Committee. The Sustainability Program Director, who co-chairs the SAC, sits on our Senior Leadership Team (SLT). The SLT provides the Executive Committee with input on key strategic and operational issues.

This commitment of resources across our leadership structure reflects the importance of sustainability and the fundamental role it plays in our business.

ERM's Operational and Governance Structure FY14

In late FY14, we elected to make some minor organizational changes to reflect the evolving business landscape and position the company for further growth. In particular, the Americas region was divided into two regions: Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America. There were no changes made to the Europe, Middle East and Africa or Asia Pacific regions. The regions are broken down into Business Units (BUs), which are often then grouped together to form Divisions, as illustrated in the diagram above.

As the change to the Americas was implemented toward the end of FY14, the majority of data in this report is published according to the former regional structure, as this is accurate for a large part of the Fiscal Year.

In addition, we have three Specialty Global Businesses:

  • Sustainability Information Solutions (SIS) advises on and delivers software systems for gathering and managing environmental, health and safety (EHS) information.
  • Global Risk Management Services (Risk) addresses the process safety and operational risks associated with the design, construction and operation of major industrial facilities.
  • ERM Certification and Verification Services (CVS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the ERM Group and delivers independent performance-driving certification, verification and report assurance services to help clients improve their sustainability performance.

Group personnel provide professional functions to support and grow ERM including health and safety, human resources, legal, finance and knowledge sharing and communications.

Nat Vanitchyangkul, Thailand

Sustainability Advisory Committee Member

I have been with ERM for over 15 years and currently serve as the Managing Partner of ERM Thailand. In addition, I lead the Environment program of ERM's Sustainability Advisory Committee, applying my expertise as ERM seeks to improve performance in this area. In this regard, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to mentor many young ERM professionals in creating innovative and sustainable approaches to improve business performance: becoming thought leaders in this area and sharing best practices with our clients.

In my position, I've had many great opportunities to help ERM and our clients work towards being responsible environmental stewards. Much of my time is spent coaching and advising senior executives from local and multinational corporations on realizing sustainable business value through corporate risk management, operational strategy, performance reporting, and improved environmental and social performance.
