As private equity continues to grow in scale and significance, it must be more aware of its own importance in playing a greater role to help transition to a world of net-zero carbon emissions.

ERM, the SustainAbility Institute by ERM and M.J. Bradley and Associates (MJB&A), an ERM Group company, co-sponsored and presented at the Ceres 2021 virtual conference in March 2021. ERM Partner Jaideep Das presented at the session on Private Equity in a Net-Zero Economy.

In his remarks, Jaideep shared insights on the dynamic and evolving market landscape, as well as some initial findings from a joint Ceres-SustainAbility Institute by ERM research project on The Changing Climate for Private Equity. The research team undertook desk-based analysis and engaged with a range of leading limited partners and general partners, with a view to understanding the investment risks and opportunities facing the private equity sector in relation to climate change and the low carbon economy transition.

The SustainAbility Institute by ERM and Ceres have now published a report based on the in-depth interviews with representatives of 27 top private equity actors and complementary research. The report reveals that the industry is facing increasing pressure to align investment activity with carbon reduction targets and other climate-related goals. However, it is also in need of better guidance and tools to support the development and implementation of climate-aligned investment strategies.
