The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) supports its member companies and the wider business community in developing roadmaps to help guide and inspire entire sectors as they seek to optimize their contributions to the SDGs.

Through its SDG Sector Roadmap project, WBCSD elaborated on this concept by publishing a framework for how companies within a given sector can come together and explore their collective potential to advance the SDG agenda. ERM provided technical support in the development of this framework, which WBCSD published in 2018.

Since then, we have worked with a range of sectors to develop their own roadmaps. With the release of "Sustainability Driven: Accelerating Impact with the Tire Sector SDG Roadmap" in May 2021, ERM has helped develop SDG roadmaps for eight sectors: US agriculture, Chemical, Electric utilities, Forestry, Oil and gas, Indian cement, Tires and Zinc.

In June 2021, WBCSD released an update to its SDG Sector Roadmap Guidelines, again developed in collaboration with ERM. Building on practical application experience acquired through working with over 70 companies on the development of roadmaps in recent years, this updated resource continues to lay out a step-by-step process that companies from the same sector can follow as they come together to explore, articulate and realize a common vision for how their industry can leverage their unique potential to contribute to the SDG agenda. The refreshed and refined set of guidelines also include case studies and examples of practical application by leading companies and associations to inspire best practice.

This work builds off recommendations from the Business and Sustainable Development Commission’s landmark Better Business Better World report, which underlined the importance of roadmaps as a tool to help guide sectoral shifts to sustainable development in line with the SDGs.

SDG Roadmaps will help guide and inspire entire sectors as they seek to optimize their contributions. We thank ERM for their support with the SDG Roadmaps and look forward to future collaboration."
