Launching ERM's fifth office in India

Debanjan Bandyopadhyay
Kolkata, India

In 2015, ERM opened a new office in Kolkata in eastern India to support the growing demand for our services from clients in India and abroad.

To celebrate the launch of ERM's fifth office in India, we organized a client reception, during which I co-facilitated a session on "An Interactive Session on Sustainability – Beyond Business as Usual." The participants were a mix of more than 30 client decision-makers, business leaders and technical experts. We discussed the evolution of India's environmental agenda, starting from the initial policy-driven environmental legislation, to the broadening of the social agenda and finally the evolution of sustainability as a business driver. The themes captured the changing dynamics of the environmental and social landscape in India and the challenges, risks and opportunities our clients face in the region with regards to sustainability.

The team in India is growing and taking the business into strategic markets such as Nepal, Bangladesh and other parts of Asia, in addition to supporting global clients investing in India. I am currently working with a team of IT professionals to develop a set of customized data analytics and GIS-based planning support for environmental and risk management. Clients are seeking web-based solutions and responsive platforms that are more visual and timely.

ERM has completed more than 5,000 projects in India in the last 20 years. This includes more than 1,000 projects with power, oil and gas, infrastructure and mining clients in eastern India and neighboring countries. I look forward to building on this platform in the years ahead.
