Managing risk around our use of contractors

Tom Stahr
Rolling Meadows, Illinois, US

I manage ERM's global Contractor Management Program (CMP), which helps ensure that we use contractors who share our commitment to health and safety, corporate governance and compliance.

The global CMP was launched initially in the United States in December 2012. Since then, we have gone live in Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Southern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Malaysia, and FY16 will bring the program to Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The global CMP aids in ERM's ongoing collection and evaluation of information about our contractors' programs and performance in areas we have identified are most important to the safe and compliant operation of our business, as well as to meet the expectations of our clients.

This program has enabled ERM to implement a consistent process for prequalifying contractors, collect relevant information for more effective decision-making and risk reduction, and add value to services provided to our clients by reducing their risk around our use of contractors.

Outside my CMP role, I serve as a disaster relief worker. Over the past 12 years, I have helped at more than 700 disaster sites. My expertise in demolition, building stabilization and debris removal services has played an integral part in my relief work. I have recently been appointed as a Director of the US chapter of The International Emergency Management Society.
