LNG Import Facilities

Environmental Impact Assessment

The Department of Energy (DoE) plans to procure power from a Floating Power Plant to be located within the Port of Richards Bays and Saldanha Bay to help meet South Africa’s electricity requirements. Transnet will need to grant the rights in the port for this project and also plans to enable the development of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import facilities within the above mentioned Ports to support the DoE’s gas-to- power programme.

The LNG Import Facilities each require Environmental Authorisation through Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) from the National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) in terms of the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), 1998 (Act No. 107 of 1998), as amended. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) the LNG Import Facilities has commenced, and you can access the EIA documentation through this website as it becomes available.

If you have any questions, or wish to register as an interested and affected party for any of the EIAs, please contact Tougheeda Aspeling of ERM.

The schedule for this Project has been extended and no new documentation is available at this stage.  Please register as an Interested and Affected Parties (I&AP) so that you can be informed when further information is made available.
