ERM has helped to bring the Speaker and the Majority Leader of the US House of Representatives and the US Congressional Delegation to COP15 together with its clients to discuss ways in which to address climate change.
The event was held during the second week of COP15 and included Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, House Committee Chairmen Waxman, Markey and Rangel, 20 other Members of Congress and a number of ERM's clients. Discussions focused on how clean energy technologies that support advancing the “smart grid” will not only support carbon reductions but would also advance US job creation.
Kara Saul Rinaldi, ERM's Policy Expert on Energy and Climate Change in the US, said: "This was an important opportunity for the US clean technology community to tell leaders of the US Congress how their businesses may grow under carbon-restricting policies. Our clients create cutting-edge solutions to addressing climate change and welcomed the opportunity for an informal discussion with key policy-makers."
The US Congressional Delegation was part of the US presence in Copenhagen to participate in an attempt to finalize an agreement that would govern international action on addressing climate change.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said of the event: “We in the Congress believe that developing the smart grid is indeed an option that can provide multiple dividends to US businesses and consumers. It can lower costs, create jobs and make our nation more competitive in the international marketplace. As we discussed today, it also is important to climate change and we think it ought to be part of the climate change debate, both here in Copenhagen and back home."
Kara's COP15 business activities also included discussions with Al Gore at an invite-only reception by the Alliance for Climate Protection - a non-profit organization he founded, in addition to number of high-level meetings, receptions, and dinners with delegates, environmental and business NGOs, and her clients.
