What is GRI and why is corporate sustainabilityreporting important?
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a non-profit organization that promotes transparent disclosure regarding economic, environmental and social sustainability performance. GRI publishes a comprehensive sustainability reporting framework that is highly respected and widely used around the world. The GRI framework was developed through a global, multi-stakeholder process.
Corporate sustainability reporting is rapidly growing all over the world. In 2011, over 2000 companies published GRI reports. GRI has a goal that by 2015 all large- and medium-sized companies in OECD countries and larger emerging countries should report publicly on their economic, environmental, social, and governance performance or explain why they do not. In the United States, an increasing number of companies are reporting in accordance with the GRI Guidelines (30% increase 2009 to 2010 and another 46% 2010 to 2011 – over 300 companies in total). More than 75% of the top 100 companies in the US report on their corporate responsibility performance.
