Case Study: IHI Corporation Ltd

Background

Conduct a comprehensive environmental impact assessment for three proposed LPG trains at a complex in Algeria for IHI Corporation.

Our Approach

IHI Corporation Ltd is a Japanese based company that produces a wide range of products for heavy industry. They have considerable experience working in Algeria and are becoming involved in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) projects as the regional demand for LPG grows.

To meet this regional demand, Algerian government owned, oil and gas company Sonatrach Petroleum Corporation (SONATRACH) is expanding its operations. Subsequently, SONATRACH contracted IHI Corporation to build three new LPG trains at one of their complexes.

Before work on the three new trains could commence IHI Corporation approached, and contracted ERM to undertake an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

IHI Corporation is a regular client of ERM’s in Japan. For the purposes of this project, our Japan office coordinated the project in cooperation with our Spanish consultants. With proven EIA experience in Algeria and the advantage of French language skills, our Spanish consultants were well placed to work closely with local personnel at the complex. ERM investigated local legal requirements, analyzed site data and worked with a local Algerian subcontractor to gather socio-economical information.

Benefits and Value

ERM ensured that all EIA bases were covered and worked to a tight schedule given the business pressures SONATRACH and thus, IHI Corporation were under.

The Algerian environmental authorities accepted ERM’s EIA submission in full and without comment. As a result IHI Corporation was granted an environmental permit to begin work on the new LPG trains immediately.

ERM’s comprehensive approach and ease at working onsite meant that the EIA results did not just fulfill regulatory requirements they provided IHI Corporation with greater insight into the complexes current operations. This enabled IHI Corporation to assess how the new LPG trains should be integrated and options for accommodating future growth that they could pass onto SONATRACH.
