Megan Lawson

Office Managing Partner, Perth, Australia

I joined ERM in 2001 with five years of industry experience. Within six years I was on the Partner in Training Program and two years later become a fully-fledged Partner. In 2013 I was asked to take on the Office Managing Partner role for the Perth office, with overall accountability for the operations (and profitability) of the office.

The key achievement that underpinned this progression was being successful at winning and delivering significant environmental impact assessments to the oil and gas sector. With a sound technical background, I have since been able to re-focus my career on people and business management.

Not an engineering firm
The aspect that I think really sets ERM apart is that we’re an organization totally focused on environmental, social and sustainability services. We’re not an engineering firm which is an important distinction from our competitors.

When I joined ERM I found it particularly appealing that I was joining a global company with genuine relocation opportunities. I was based in Australia but within my first four months I secured an opportunity to move to Holland for a six-month project-specific secondment, which turned into more than three years of exciting project work travelling and working in Holland, Germany, Belgium, Russia, Italy and the UK. I subsequently returned to Australia, but to Perth, on the other side of the country where there were the best professional development opportunities for me.

Following many years of being responsible for major environmental impact assessments, primarily for large oil and gas developments, I’m now also leading improvements in the operational efficiency of the Perth office in Australia.

I’m lucky enough to work closely with other partners and team leaders, as well as representatives from human resources and finance. Together, we ensure that all of our 60+ consultants in the Perth office have the best opportunities to contribute to challenging projects. In fact, I enjoy facilitating opportunities for individuals to develop their own careers within ERM and potentially to become a Partner one day too.
