Converting animal waste into biogas for rural farmers in Mexico

Sistema Biobolsa is a small Mexico-based enterprise that manufactures bio-digesters for Mexican farmers. The bio-digesters convert animal waste into biogas, providing small-scale farmers with a sustainable and affordable alternative to carbon-intensive fuel sources such as firewood or diesel. The digesters also produce a natural fertilizer that can be used by the farmers to replace chemical fertilizers.

In FY16, the ERM Foundation’s Low Carbon Enterprise Fund (LCEF) invested $200,000 in Sistema Biobolsa to help them scale their operations. Post-investment, Sistema Biobolsa recorded $100,000 in sales in the first quarter of FY16, with 128 systems installed mitigating 961 tonnes of CO2 equivalent by the end of the year.

Consultants from ERM’s Mexico City office are now providing pro bono technical support for Sistema Biobolsa to quantify the environmental, social and Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction benefits of the bio-digesters, and advising how they may be able to obtain carbon credits to support their long term operations.
