Alastair Gow-Smith

Senior Consultant with the Impact Assessment and Planning Practice in the United Kingdom

I feel that the work I do can make genuine changes to how companies operate on the ground. The people I work with have a real passion for what they do and an appetite to deliver sustainable outcomes to their clients. We really care about the activities we’re involved in and will always go the extra mile to create a favorable outcome.

I strongly believe that corporate entities have a responsibility to manage the way that they develop projects and in the field of sustainability, ERM has a proven record and reputation as one of the best in class. It’s such a niche area that our social consulting team is full of like-minded people who are passionate about the work they’re doing.

Rewarding
Primarily my role focuses on the management and delivery of social impact assessments for mining and oil and gas projects in Africa. This involves some time travelling overseas to supervise data collection with impacted communities, or carrying out stakeholder engagement activities. This means that I am in a really rewarding position, one where I can see the changes that we have recommended implemented on the ground.

One of my biggest successes has been an impact assessment we’ve undertaken in relation to a mine in the Amazon. We’ve been involved with the project for almost three years and have been able to support the client in the way they have built their team and developed their project.
