Protecting your privacy
What personal information do we collect and why do we need it?
To enable us to perform our core business functions which include providing environmental, health, safety, risk and social consulting services, we need to collect personal information such as your:
- address (and previous address);
- date of birth;
- contact information, including work, home and mobile telephone numbers; and
- account details and other financial information.
We use this information to achieve our business and administrative purposes and to send you material about ERM.
If you choose not to provide your personal information, we may not be able to provide you with the consulting services offered by, or any information about, ERM.
How do we collect personal information?
We collect your personal information in person, in writing, by telephone, through our website (www.erm.com) and by other electronic communication. We collect this information through our staff and through our contracted agents and other service providers.
In relation to collection of personal information via our website, we use two types of cookies, namely:
(a) session cookies, which are only used during a single browsing session to let our website know that the same person is using it during that session. As soon as your browser is closed, the session cookie set by our website is destroyed; and
(b) permanent cookies, which are downloaded onto your computer when you visit our website.
These cookies enable us to recognise your browser every time you visit our website and to track the pages you print and visit.
We may need to ask you or others further questions to verify the correctness of the information collected and to protect your personal information from unauthorised access, modification, disclosure or other misuse.
Wherever practicable, we will ask you for your personal information directly. However, we may need to contact others such as your employers, business associates, bankers, credit reference agencies and referees.
Who will see or have access to your personal information?
Unless we are required to provide your personal information to others by law, by court order or to investigate suspected fraud or other unlawful activity, your information will only be seen or used by persons working for us.
These people will include our own and our contract customer service staff, sales agents, marketing people, insurers, funders and advisers. These people will be located around the world.
You consent that your information may be collected, stored, retained or processed outside of the country in which you are located.
Our information systems and files are kept secure from unauthorised access and our staff, agents and service providers have been informed of the importance we place on protecting your privacy and their role in helping us to do so.
You can also help us protect your personal information by taking precautions when using the Internet. It is a good idea to regularly change any passwords and to use a secure browser.
What if I want to check what personal information you hold about me?
Subject to any legal restrictions we are happy to advise you of what personal information we hold about you on request. If your request is particularly complex or requires detailed searching of our records, there may be a cost to you in order for us to provide this information.
If you believe there are errors in our records about you, please let us know and we will be happy to investigate and correct any inaccuracies.
ERM means the ERM Group of companies; and
Personal information means information or an opinion (including information or an opinion forming part of a database), whether true or not and whether recorded in a material form or not about an individual whose identity is apparent, or can reasonably be ascertained, from the information or opinion.
