Emerging Needs for Social risk management in China
Insufficient management of social issues and China CSR strategy is becoming a real risk to international firms moving from merely importing into China to managing fast growing operations in the country itself. Companies operating in China must be concerned not only with their economic interest, but also with social and environmental issues. Failing to implement social management can threaten brand asset and reputation, licenses to operate, and result in missed opportunities for gains in brand development and positive employees and stakeholder relations.

For Chinese companies operating or listing abroad, new challenges are being faced in meeting international standards for social management demanded by consumers, or investors such as through the London Stock Exchange FTSE4Good requirement or Dow Jones Sustainability Index requirements.

ERM China social consulting services has experience in supporting leading international and Chinese companies to deal with social and Corporate Social Responsibility both in China and at the international strategy level. We have skills in delivering CSR strategy, implementation and CSR reporting consulting, or China labour audits, China social impact assessments and community resettlement support.

Key Social Issues for business in China
  • Retaining good labour in a tightening market
  • Building good Corporate Governance
  • Maintaining the trust of China’s increasingly informed consumers and the growing ‘NGO’ community
Retaining good labour in a tightening market
In 2004 it was reported that China’s industry power-house province Guangzhou experienced labour shortages for the first time. Many observers have put this down to growing migrant worker awareness of labour rights, unwillingness to put up with bad labour conditions, in particular unpaid wages, and increased opportunities back in their home provinces.

It is not only an unskilled worker issue. Even in Beijing of professional employees of a major multinational firm went on strike in a successful protest over trade unions and overtime conditions. It is increasingly difficult for firms to retain a good labour force without understanding and abiding by China’s labour laws. Good business knows that good people are an asset that needs to be invested in to help contribute to long-term profit generation, and a positive brand.

ERM’s systems4people interventions not only helps businesses in China to understand labour laws relevant to their business, and where they are not complying, but also to implement changes for short term results and plan improvements for long term profitability which at the very least meet legal requirements. As a result legal risks are reduced and both employee retention and brands are improved.

Building good Corporate Governance
Good corporate governance is a key issue for business in China. CSR programmes identify where and how governance can be improved. Improving corporate governance through China Corporate Social Responsibility Advisory is especially important for Chinese companies wishing to list on international stock markets.

Maintaining the trust of China’s increasingly informed consumers and the growing ‘NGO’ community
It is increasingly important for both international companies operating in China and leading Chinese companies to ensure that not only are they operating responsibly but that they are seen externally to be doing so through their CSR programme. ERM is experienced in designing and delivering stakeholder identification, stakeholder dialogue and community consultation interventions around social and environmental issues to build partnerships and win-win developments for business and society. This can be particularly important to ensure the avoidance of negative publicity from badly handled development and/or community resettlement. Issues can also be identified as part of due diligence through Social Assessment services.
