ERM Executive Workshop: Greenhouse Gas Management in Kazakhstan
15 March 2010
ERM is holding a half-day workshop in Atyrau on 15 March 2010 to discuss the challenges and opportunities in GHG management in Kazakhstan under the emerging national regulations.
At the recent UN Climate Change conference in Copenhagen, Kazakhstan has applied to be an Annex B country of the Kyoto Protocol with a binding greenhouse gas reduction emission commitment to maintain greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at 1990 levels between 2008-2012.
With agreement on this expected at the next UN Climate Change conference in December 2010, Kazakhstan will receive governmental carbon credits and will be able to host Joint Implementation (JI) projects.
In preparation, the Kazakh Ministry of Environmental Protection has adopted an Action Plan to combat climate change. Kazakhstan legislation currently requires facilities in certain industries to prepare a GHG inventory by 30 March 2010 and a GHG Inventory Passport by 30 June 2010. A draft methodology for calculating GHG emissions is now under discussion within the Government of Kazakhstan and is expected to be released in the near future
