| Health Impact Assessment Services | Health Impact Asssessment (HIA) is a practical approach for assessing how a project is likely to affect people's health. It can be carried out as an individual study, but is more commonly addressed as part of an integrated environmental, social and health assessment (ESHIA). An HIA is best undertaken before a project is implemented to assess health conditions, predict the impacts the project may have on the local population and the project workforce and to advise on the measures which will help increase the positive aspects of the project and minimise or avoid any negative impacts.
HIA Services:
- Quantitative health risk assessment of project activities during construction, operation and decommissioning
- Physical, social, mental and behavioural impact assessment
- Integrated assessments, including health, social, economic and transport impact consultation
- Community and population profiling
- Strategic health assessment planning aid
- Integrated assessment
HIA Benefits:
HIA can bring benefits to projects in both developed and developing countries by helping to:
- identify positive as well as negative impacts of a project, providing information that will help strengthen and promote the benefits of a project;
- systematically incorporate workforce and community health considerations into project management;
- aid and speed up planning processes;
- reduce the likelihood of major health issues affecting the local community or workforce;
- identify areas where social investments into the local community, eg health care facilities, can be made; and
- limit external criticism of a project and increase the likelihood of project success in terms of local and international acceptance.
