ERM

Juan Carlos Rangel

Project Manager, Mexico City, Mexico

When I joined ERM 12 years ago, the office had less than 10 people so the technical staff really did do a bit of everything. Although my engineering background was in solid waste management, I was involved in environmental impact assessment and Phase I and II due diligence work within my first few months here.  I was able to develop my experience in the Contaminated Site Management and Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) practice areas, which was a great way to find out what I really wanted to do.  After completing my Masters, which ERM fully supported, I returned to ERM, this time fully engaged in the area that interested me most, M&A.

Career path to achieve your potential

The company has certainly believed in me over the years, giving me the chance to really grow.  Currently, my role is to manage both the M&A and Water/Wastewater practices in Mexico, where our local team has grown to 40. I feel this role is a good match with my career interests – I like learning about industrial processes and you certainly do that when involved in M&A work – and my background in engineering and municipal water and infrastructure. I also spent time working in the Houston office for six months to give me the chance to learn from the people, expanding my knowledge of this field of work and bring back ideas that would help us locally.

There is a defined career track at ERM. I am currently aiming to participate in our Partner-in-Training Program, and looking ahead to one day managing the M&A practice across the Latin America and Caribbean region.  It’s reassuring that you don’t have to change companies to develop your career.

Commitment to helping others grow

What I really like about working at ERM is the fact that there is always something new to learn.  Whether it is finding out more about an industrial process, the life cycle of the products we use every day or teaming with ERM experts in another field, there is always the opportunity to improve yourself and help do the same for others.

As my career has developed, so has my ability to help others grow in their chosen profession.  Coaching colleagues is very rewarding and when I see their pride in a finished project, it is rewarding to know I’ve helped them to learn and improve their skills as many ERMers have help me.  It is important to pass on this support to the new ERMers as they face a wealth of opportunities to develop professionally and have the potential of working almost anywhere in the world.
