Berbak Carbon Value Initiative

Indonesia

Berbak National Park, Indonesia, is internationally recognized for its biodiversity. Despite its protected status, however, it is being heavily deforested, causing high emissions of carbon dioxide and putting biodiversity and local communities at risk.

The Berbak Carbon Value (BCV) Initiative is a project which could potentially fit under the UN’s Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) scheme. This scheme harnesses the carbon and biodiversity value of Berbak National Park to drive down deforestation, while simultaneously positioning it as the first self-sustaining national park in Indonesia. Finances raised from the carbon market will be channelled back into a joint forest management entity, tasked with addressing the root causes of deforestation.

ERM consultants have conducted pro-bono work to refine the concept, position it within the government and investors, and familiarize it with key stakeholders. We has also produced a report to assist the project, explaining the current status of the international forest carbon market, specifying the REDD finance schemes available to Indonesia, and outlining the important issues that affect the project’s ability to secure carbon finance.
