Solar lamps for off grid highland villages

Nepal

Off-grid communities in Nepal are dependent on inefficient kerosene lamps to light their homes, which is costly to poorer families and polluting to the environment. These lamps also subject families to the fluctuating prices of fuel.

To tackle this problem, the Low Carbon Enterprise Fund has invested in a company in Nepal that manufactures and sells solar-powered lamps to off-grid communities.. Charging stations have been set up in schools so that parents can send a lamp with their children to be charged for a nominal fee- an added incentive for parents to send their children to school. The scheme has also created employment and provides a cheaper and healthier alternative for children studying at night in their homes.
