Protecting an important area of tropical rainforest

Guyana

The Iwokrama Reserve is located in one of the last pristine tropical forests of the world. This area of forest has been given special protection by the Guyanese government, who want it to be used for science, learning, and as a showcase for sustainability.

The LCEF is supporting the International Centre for Rainforest Conservation & Development (IIC) in its attempt to create a model for sustainable rainforest use. The IIC has developed eco-tourism in the area, which is proving popular with bird-watching groups around the world. An FSC-certified management operation has also been implemented to generalize sustainable logging practices. Strong emphasis is placed on engaging local communities and training foresters and rangers. A science and research programme has also been put in place to educate future generations about the area.

The IIC has increased its eco-tourism capacity thanks to the LCEF’s loan. This now allows certain large tour operators to represent the facility. They have also improved the conditions of the lodges following our consultants’ advice. We are also helping them develop their business strategy
