Foundation in North America wins award for work in rural Tanzania

Tanzania

The Bukoba and Izigo region of Tanzania has been ravaged by HIV and AIDS, rendering many mothers sole providers for their families on an average income of just US$2 per day. Their difficulties are compounded by a two hour walk to fetch clean drinking water.

Against all odds, the villagers have set up a goat farming enterprise but the scarcity of clean water means that neither the goats nor the families have access to sufficient water resulting in the goats' milk production being scaled back to a third of what it should and could be.

COSAD (Community Solutions for Africa’s Development) is an NGO that promotes sustainable economic development in rural Tanzania. The Foundation in North America gave them a grant that made it possible for a well to be constructed in Izigo village square. This has given the villagers and their goats a plentiful supply of clean drinking water, thus increasing levels of milk production and improving general health.

In recognition of this the Foundation has been awarded COSAD’s "Golden Partnership Award."
